Point Lookout Lighthouse Newsletter #9

Over 150 visitors attended the July 1 st open house!  Among the visitors was a
descendent of keeper William Yeatman: Joseph Kendall, a great-grandson of the
longest serving keeper of the lighthouse.  Mr. Kendall had a picture of
William Yeatman walking the buoy tracks at Point Lookout.   Follow the
Pictures link from the home page to “Pictures of keeper William Yeatman’s
Family”, or go to the picture directly by pasting the following link in your

Robert exchanged contact information with the Kendall family and we hope to
discover more details about the fascinating Yeatman family.  Mr. Kendall’s
mother was Mary Ann Green, who was born on October 8, 1908 in St. Mary’s
county, about 5 months after keeper William Yeatman died. Mary Ann’s mother,
Emma Sanner Yeatman Green, was the 11th child born to William and Anna Maria
Yeatman on October 6, 1878 at Point Lookout.  Weeks after her birth, the
Steamship Express would sink in the waters off the lighthouse.   (Genealogical
information courtesy of Larry Hessler).

Several visitors were very generous with their contributions and we greatly
appreciate the donations!  The donations will be used to renovate the interior
of the lighthouse and then furnish the rooms with period furniture, so that
the lighthouse will have the feel of the glory days back in 1928 when the
lighthouse was freshly remodeled to the duplex structure we visit today.

The next open house is scheduled for Saturday, August 5 from 10 am until 2 pm.

Hope to see you there!
