November 1, 2004

Welcome to the second edition of the Point Lookout Lighthouse newsletter!

It has been a busy year, and we wanted to update you with the latest information.

 * The Open House will be held on November 6th AND 7th from 10 am to 4 pm, and yes, you read correctly - the open house will be two days this year!  No word yet if the park will be charging an entrance fee.  Laura and Robert will have a table with pictures and historical artifacts.    Please stop by and say hello.

 * After years of painstaking research, Robert is almost ready to unveil a new and updated keeper list, which includes many surprises, including historical documents to validate each keeper’s term at the lighthouse.   Many of the previously published lists include a number of errors and inaccuracies, so be sure to check out the new keeper list.  The next step will be to identify the assistant keepers and other personnel who served at the lighthouse.

 * Laura and Robert were filmed for two television shows about the lighthouse: Mystery Hunters on Discovery Kids and Weird Travels on the Travel Channel.   No airdates have been finalized, but the Weird Travels segment should air sometime between now and December; the Mystery Hunters segment should appear sometime in early 2005.

 * In May, Laura and Robert toured the lighthouse with former assistant keeper Charlie Kidd and his wife.   The Kidd’s had not seen the inside of the lighthouse since they left the Point back in 1959.  The website includes an interview with former assistant keepers Charlie Kidd and Raymond Hartzel.   In the near future, we hope to add additional interviews from other family members who lived in the lighthouse or who had family members who lived in the lighthouse!

 * Robert and Laura participated in annual meeting of the Backyard Yacht Builder’s Assocation (BYYB).   The group toured the lighthouse, and we answered their questions.   We also sailed on a member’s boat on Lake Canoy.    For full details, check out the Misc section of the website.

* During the Chesapeake Chapter’s Lighthouse Challenge, Laura and Robert met family members of former lighthouse keepers.

Please check out the updates on the website, and we hope to see you at the Open House!
